The Prepared Environment

To build on children’s innate desire to learn while at the
same time encouraging learning about the world around them,
Dr Montessori designed the ‘Prepared Environment
f
eaturing childs sized furniture, low shelves and
specially designed learning tools.

Our classrooms allow children to work at their own pace
with the tools or materials they have chosen.

These are activities which are ordinarily within the adult
environment and offer exciting challenges to the childs.
Activities such as sweeping, polishing, window washing,

Sensorial

Since children quite naturally use their powers of observation
during their early years, Montessori felt that this was
the ideal time to give children her scientific apparatus
to sharpen their senses and enable them to understand
many impressions received from the world.

The Sensorial Materials in our classrooms help your child
to build up their visual, olfactory, tasting, smelling and kinesthetic senses.

They learn to differentiate, discriminate and categories
information based on these perceptions

Language

Writing always comes before reading in a Montessori classroom.
Writing skills are learned through experiences with
sand paper letters by touch as well as by sight and sound.

Children build up their words phonetically using sand paper letters.
The reading progresses through three series: pink, blue and
green and grammar kits. Writing skills are learned through
experiences with sand paper
letters by touch as well as
by sight and sound. A wide range of story and reference
picture books are always available at the reading corner.

Mathematics

Children gain a physical impression of quantity and size even
before they begin to understand numbers by handling number
rods, counting beads and counting spindles into boxes. Concrete
mathematical equipments: sphere, oval and pyramid enable the
child
to continue their own exploration in abstract number concept.

Culture

Children begin with globes and study the seven continents in the
world. Looking at all countries individually of continent they will
recognize the animals and other artifacts which originate
from each continent.

The land forms teach geographical features. Children will learn
through a set of model showing islands, bays, capes, peninsular,
isthmuses and lakes for children to fill with water. The wonderful
scale models of the planets and the solar system will be shown
in the classroom too.

Science materials such as magnets, light and air enable children to
understand more about science at work in our daily life.
Children use classification cards for naming, matching or
identifying anything and everything. When children leave
Montessori school, the breadth of  knowledge they have of their
world can be quite astounding.
