Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in Italy. At the age of 26, she gained the distinction of being the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome in Medicine and surgery.

Dr Montessori  practiced  medicine  and  held  the  Chair  of  Hygiene  and  Anthropology from  1896-1911

In 1907 she opened her House of Children (Casa de Bambini) for children under six years of age. After  two  years  of  intensive  study  and  development  she produced her ground breaking book, The Montessori Method, Educationalists and thinkers around the world quickly recognized it as a watershed, It was translated, read, discussed and put into action throughout Europe, the USA, India, South America and Australia.

Dr. Montessori died in 1952, aged 82. Her accomplishment: generations of children around the world who had benefited directly from her work, thought and her knowledge that will continue to benefit children.
